Knowing what you already have and what you need is the most cost-effective way to shop and can save you time when you are shopping.

1. Clean out your closet so you can see exactly what you have to work with. A lot of women gravitate for the same thing over and over again while shopping- all black pants, all solid shirts, all patterned clothes, and you can easily see a trend once you pull everything out of your closet.
2. Make a list of items you need to fill in the gaps in your wardrobe. You may only need to purchase a few things to make your wardrobe work for you. You make a list of items you need when you go to the grocery store- why wouldn’t you do the same for your wardrobe?
3. Only buy the things you LOVE and make you feel amazing. Many women buy clothing that isn’t right for them. They decide before they even try an item on that they are going to purchase it because they love it on the hanger. This is a costly mistake. You buy it, take it home all excited, and then it hangs in the closet. Every time you put it on- there’s something just not quite right about it. The key is to try everything on to see how things fit on your BODY, not the hanger.
4. Invest in classic clothing, pieces that will never go out of style, in neutral colors. You can easily update these pieces with fun and exciting accessories such as necklaces, earrings, bracelets, shoes and handbags at a fraction of the cost of buying new trendy items each season.
Tip from the Pros: every new purchase should relate back to at least two items in your existing wardrobe. You can create multiple outfits by combining new and old items and avoid “stand alone” pieces that don’t go with anything else.

My husband coined that term on New Year’s Eve…and I thought it sounded a little selfish…until he explained: this is the year for all of us to own who we are and make no excuses.
For example, I LOVE to shop! That is who I am, what I love to do, and one of the things I am passionate about. I have built a business on that passion and am proud of myself for being able to help others feel good by encouraging them to find their style and dress accordingly. A lot of people ask me if I ski or snowboard all the time since I live so close to the mountains and I used to make excuses or play it down. Now, however, I tell them- I don’t really like to ski, I like to shop. So, my hubby and I go to the mountains- he snowboards and I shop. We both get to do what we love to do.
I highly recommend doing this: make a list of who you are and what’s important to you. Own it- it is YOU…no apologies.
